Update: Graphic Narration and Jury Day
This has been an element of this particular design process that we have struggled a lot with [or at least I have] because it's something new and that's daunting. The first thing i did was analyze the shadows that the roofing structure created and make a short video from that; wrong. The next step we did as a group and made several short videos about how those same shadows interacted with anything that passed beneath the structure; wrong. Later on, again as a group, we created several different variation on the theme of using the roof to filter light, and it was the first time that the project didn't seem to go completely to the left.
Growing on this idea, we created a sort of selection menu [loosely based off of character selection menus] where the main idea is to make it seem like a program where you can add several characteristic and play around with the design end product. Different windows on this element show the type of column, the type of roofing structure, the material being used, the amount of perforations made in the roofing structure, the joint type, cross-sections, how it would look if you added several of the same components side-by-side and the shadow that it would produce. Although this idea is far from being complete, it helped us as a group to further the design of the pavilion.
During the jury today, the juror constantly leaned on the graphic narration print outs and told us that the most effective part of our presentation was the graphic narration. Although heart breaking to hear that our design was lacking, we accepted that it was and are now on attempt number one-thousand, embracing the fact that we are closer to an end product that we, as students can be proud of, and that the professor can grant a good grade.
